A million years ago, when I was in my early 20's, I went down to a nearby park, climbed a high perch of rock, and took the very first photo I ever thought worthy of enlarging and framing. There was a pier there, the sun was coming down and there was a willow tree in the foreground...all really nice and serene-y. That photo is still hanging in my parent's living room.
Almost 40 years later, I got it in my head to venture down there once again, and see if I can recapture a little of the past. Well, as often happens, the past wasn't really there anymore. In this particular instance, I think it was blown away during Hurricane Irene, but it might have left before then.
All that was left of my pier, were the supports that held up the planks that one would walk on as they ventured out towards the end.
So for me, another reminder about life from my annoyingly optimistic perspective...just because things change, and just because things disappear, doesn't mean things always get worse. Oh sure...the pier is a tad harder to meander out on. Death defying actually. But how cool looking is it now??? Almost like the skeletal ribcage of a long deceased "thing", yet somehow alive and...well....not so well. But they'll rebuild it, and if you build it, they will come. So someday in the future, there will be folks meandering and holding hands and fishing and quite possibly falling off, my little pier.
But for now, I'm glad I tried to recapture the past. And failed.
